‘Flappy Bird’ Creator Not Involved In & Disavows Game Revival

Following the reveal of the upcoming fan-made Flappy Bird revival courtesy of the Flappy Bird Foundation, original developer Dong Nguyen has confirmed that he is not involved in the new project.

This was announced via his post to X/Twitter on 15 September, where Nguyen clarified that he has “no (relation) with their game”. He also stated that he does not support crypto, seemingly referring to the fact that the new game is backed by 1208 Productions, a Web3 firm specialising in crypto, NFTs and the metaverse.

Nguyen’s comments confirm that the Flappy Bird Foundation acquired the rights to Flappy Bird due to the abandoning of the IP.

The original Flappy Bird took the world by storm when it was released in 2013, reportedly earning US$50,000 a day in advertising revenue. Despite this, Nguyen pulled the game from sale a year later, stating “Flappy Bird (is) a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.”

The new version of Flappy Bird is set to be released by the end of October 2024 for web browsers, with iOS and Android versions soon to follow in 2025.
