‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ Part 3’s Story Is Complete, Will Not Be Exclusive To Next-Gen PlayStation Console

Development on the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has reached an important milestone, as series producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed the completion of the game’s story scenario, which was done at the end of 2024.

Speaking to Famitsu ahead of the PC launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Kitase gave an update on the status of part three, saying that he was “very satisfied with it” and expressing confidence that fans will feel the same way too, adding that creative director Tetsuya Nomura was tasked with making sure that the game’s conclusion would not only be respectful to the original but provide a renewed sense of satisfaction.

Speaking on the game’s release on PC, Kitase noted that due to rising development costs, the team has looked towards a new goal of delivering its games to a wider market, which falls in line with Square Enix’s recent transition to a multiplatform strategy for their new releases, done in a move to “diversify earnings opportunities” and “maximise digital sales of new titles”.

To this end, Kitase also emphasised in a separate interview with 4Gamer that the upcoming title will not follow the series’ current trend of being locked to one generation of PlayStation consoles on release. For context, Final Fantasy VII Remake launched in 2020 on the PS4, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released four years later as a PS5 exclusive. When asked if part three would follow the same pattern and be locked to Sony’s next-generation console, he explained that fans can be “rest assured” that this will not be the case.

With this in mind, there is a chance that part three might be released on other platforms too, be it on launch or via a timed exclusivity deal, although this is pure speculation at this point. At the minimum, the title would most likely head to PC down the line, similar to the first two parts and other games in the franchise like Final Fantasy XVI.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on PC via Steam. As for the finale of the trilogy, no indication of its release window has been given as of yet, although Square Enix has stated previously that it hopes to release it by 2027.
