After the resurgence of the Evil Dead horror franchise with Evil Dead Rise, which grossed over US$147 million at the global box office, it’s unsurprising that a spin-off film would be in development soon enough. Indie horror film director Sébastien Vaniček will helm the project as co-writer and director.
Vaniček has made several indie films, including the debut French film Vermin, about deadly reproductive spiders. Vermin has won several awards at various film festivals, including Best Motion Picture at the Sitges Film Festival.
No plot or casting details have been revealed, but Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures are attached to the project. It will likely be disconnected from the main plot of Evil Dead Rise, being a spin-off film, but there might be some Easter eggs fans can look out for.
It’ll be a while before the next Evil Dead film hits theatres. As reported by Collider, “We’re going to do them probably more like every two to three years now, rather than every 10 years,” said producer Bruce Campbell, “but, hey, we’ve seen with Star Wars – you don’t want to wear people out. Keep them guessing! We never wore out our welcome with Evil Dead because we never choked them.”
