‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ Gameplay Reveal Evolves The Franchise

Dragon Age: The Veilguard was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, and debuted a 20-minute gameplay video on YouTube. Fans have been cautiously optimistic about the game, and expect this sequel to be the return to the original authentic feel of the first Dragon Age: Origins game from 2009.

Instead, this is a sequel to 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, itself a poorly regarded sequel to 2011’s Dragon Age. From the gameplay, there is heavier focus on action PRG elements, making this the most action-oriented Dragon Age game to date that’s more reminiscent of Mass Effect 2 than medieval fantasy. And as for the nods to the original, it’s in the form of returning characters and not on the game mechanics that matter more to fans

The gameplay demo starts in the middle of a quest chain, picking up years after the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, where the protagonist finds ice mage Neve Gallus, but soon discovers a sinister plot orchestrated by Solas, who attempts a ritual to destroy the Veil and split Thedas from the magical realm of the Fade. Demons soon spill out into the realm, as a new threat rises.

While we didn’t get to see the character creator in action, Eurogamer’s demo preview teased a detailed character creator with the usual races to choose from, with plenty of subcategories to customise every aspect of the player character.

The combat in the gameplay preview video is intense, as protagonist Rook fights their way to stop the ritual along with their companions, and several terrifying enemies appear along the way, including a Pride Demon. It’ll be interesting to see how returning fan favourites like archer Lance Harding, who is now a full-time game companion and Solas’ villain arc play out, and how they’ve developed within the story.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases in Fall 2024, so keep a look out for more developments on the game!
