‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Dethrones ‘Joker’ As Top-Grossing R-Rated Film

Deadpool & Wolverine has officially become the highest-grossing R-rated film globally. Surpassing the previous record held by Joker, the superhero blockbuster has amassed an impressive US$1.142 billion worldwide, with US$545.8 million from domestic audiences and US$596.8 million internationally.

Disney confirmed this milestone through a press release last week, noting that it took just 23 days for Deadpool & Wolverine to reach this historic figure. The film’s rapid ascent began with its record-setting opening day, where it earned US$96 million, ranking as the sixth-highest opening day of all time. The momentum continued throughout its opening weekend, marking it as the sixth-largest domestic opening weekend in box office history.

Deadpool & Wolverine not only sets a new benchmark for R-rated films but also joins the prestigious US$1 billion club, becoming the 31st film from Walt Disney Studios and the 11th from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to achieve this feat. It is the second Disney film of 2024 to cross the US$1 billion threshold, following closely behind Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which premiered in May.

“People thought when Disney bought Marvel, ‘They’re going to shave off the hard edges. They’re going to make it all G-rated. Of course, that was never the intention.” Kevin Feige said, noting that the secret to integrating Deadpool into Disney was to “let Deadpool be Deadpool.”

Deadpool & Wolverine actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman took to Instagram to commemorate this success:

The film stars Reynolds, returning as the wise-cracking Deadpool, and Jackman, reprising his iconic role as Wolverine. The dynamic duo’s return to the big screen, combined with a series of memorable cameos, has fuelled the film’s success since its theatrical release on 25 July.

Since its debut, Deadpool & Wolverine has consistently surpassed expectations, outperforming the entire lifetime grosses of both its predecessors, Deadpool and Deadpool 2, both domestically and internationally. Its success marks a significant moment for the franchise, indicating the enduring popularity and commercial viability of these beloved characters.
