Conservative media company The Daily Wire is giving right-wingers what they want – a Snow White live-action movie that promises to be nothing like Disney’s.
The announcement came in the form of a teaser release with conservative YouTuber Brett Cooper as the princess Snow White. The movie is titled Snow White and the Evil Queen and is based on the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
“It’s a story about a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life,” said Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing. “It’s our own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale.”
Boreing also managed to make a few digs at the House of Mouse in his announcement, claiming that the company has abandoned the legacy of founder Walt Disney. Boreing also called Disney “political”.
“While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy. Disney has become a completely political organization. And that’s an enormous loss because Disney has the greatest content library ever created in the history of man,” added Boreing.
“It’s taken 100 years to build Disney. We know we aren’t what they are today, but we hope in time we might become what they were once upon a time: a little studio with big ideas and the courage to chase them.”
When Disney announced its adaptation of the tale, conservatives took plenty of issues with it. First, with the casting of Latina actress Rachel Zegler who conservatives said didn’t fit the original Brothers Grimm story of a princess who has “skin as white as snow.”
Disney also changed the changed what was formerly the seven dwarfs into a diverse collection of magical creatures of varying sizes and genders.
Zegler’s comments about the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs also rubbed many fans the wrong way. In an interview with Variety, the 22-year-old actress suggested that she didn’t like the original film and that the new movie would take a very different approach.
“She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true,” said Zegler.
In another, Zegler called the original “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for in the world” (via EW). She also told Extra TV, “The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird.”
Snow White and the Evil Queen is coming sometime in 2024 on Bentkey, the media company’s streaming service. Disney’s Snow White is set for theatres on 22 March 2024.
