‘Colorful Stage! The Movie’ Brings Hatsune Miku’s Melodies To Theatres

Wonderhoy! On Monday, CyberAgent announced an exciting collaboration on X/Twitter between Colorful Palette, a subsidiary of Craft Egg, and Sega to bring an anime film based on the popular smartphone game, Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku, to the big screen.

Titled COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing (Gekijо̄ban Project Sekai: Kowareta Sekai to Utaenai Miku), the film is set to premiere in Japanese theatres on 17 January 2025 and will feature all the beloved characters from the mobile game itself.

Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku is a mobile rhythm game that follows the stories of various high schoolers, all connected by the fact that they can use their mobile phones to enter different virtual worlds. The characters meet famous virtual idols in these worlds, including Hatsune Miku herself, who guide them through the ups and downs life throws at them.

Fans of the game were pleasantly surprised by the announcement, which was made after an earlier teaser on X/Twitter, which many assumed to be a reveal of a new unit for the game’s upcoming fourth anniversary. This reveal will be the first time Hatsune Miku as a character will feature prominently in an anime. Before this, the iconic virtual diva has often been relegated to being a cameo or a throwaway gag whenever she shows up in a show.

Additional information was revealed on X/Twitter, revealing the movie will be directed by Hiroyuki Hata (Recently, My Sister Is Unusual.), with a screenplay by Yoko Yonaiyama (A Sign of Affection). Character designs are handled by Yuki Akiyama (Shirobako: The Movie), who also serves as chief animation director alongside Masatoshi Tsuji (Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] II. lost butterfly). Satoshi Hōno (Aggretsuko) is composing the music.

Speculation is rife on social media about the existence of this new Hatsune Miku, as well as whether this movie will tie into the game’s plot itself. The movie is set to premiere in Japan on 17 January 2025, but fingers crossed it will also be available globally.
