Coca-Cola Unveils Space-Flavoured ‘Starlight’ Soda… Which Tastes Like Outer Space

When you think of flavours for carbonated drinks, what comes to mind? The cornucopia of fruit flavours, vanilla, ginger, and maybe some weird ones like cucumber or chocolate. The one thing in common is that they’re all based on familiar foodstuff with distinct tastes. Coca-Cola, in what seems to be a postmodernist approach to the idea of flavours, is releasing a limited edition Starlight soda that’s supposed to taste like outer space.

This is unlike other limited-edition Coca-Cola releases, such as the Star Wars bottles, as this isn’t a simple cosmetic makeover. No, the taste of the drink itself is supposed to taste like space. We have no idea how an abstract, all-encompassing concept can be contained into a flavour that’s contained within a can or bottle.

The Starlight soda will come in regular and zero sugar versions, and its product description states that it’ll transport consumers “to a new galaxy with each sip”. Call us sceptical, but either Coca-Cola has just invented faster-than-light travel, or that’s hyperbole. It’s also stated that the soda has “notes reminiscent of stargazing around a campfire, as well as a cooling sensation that evokes the feeling of a cold journey to space,” which still doesn’t tell us anything about its actual taste.

The drink is from Coca-Cola Creations, a new platform for Coca-Cola to explore new soda flavours. Starlight is the first drink from the platform, which is meant to introduce limited-edition experimental flavours to consumers. For those curious to find out what space tastes like, Coca-Cola Starlight is available on Amazon.
