For players seeking a trip down memory lane in the form of beat ’em up games, Modus Game and developer Secret Base have something awesome to share with the gaming community. Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will be a cooperative beat ‘em up featuring “tag team duos of fighters infused with roguelite elements to deliver classically informed, highly replayable Double Dragon-style brawls with a new edge.”
Players will return to New York City in the year 199X following a nuclear war, and all hell has broken loose with criminals running the show. Unwilling to endure these conditions any longer, young Billy and Jimmy Lee take it upon themselves to reclaim their city. Together with Marian and newcomer Uncle Matin, players can fight with devastating combos, defensive and offensive moves, and seamless tag team abilities, while also having access to 13 unique playable characters.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons will feature two-player local co-op, and the dynamic mission structure, where the order in which players choose their mission will affect the length, number of enemies, and overall difficulty will ensure that experiences are fresh each time. Online co-op is planned as a post-launch update later this year.
Cash can be spent at the end of each stage to unlock powerful upgrades for your chosen characters, and in defeat, players can convert any remaining cash into tokens usable to permanently unlock extra characters and bonuses in-between sessions.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons recalls the series’ classic aesthetic with refreshed pixel art visuals, sporting updated-yet-faithful appearances for both returning heroes and villains and a stirring soundtrack which keeps players ready for the next fight. With unlockable bonuses, adjustable difficulty levels and optional permadeath and infinite modes, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons looks set to be a robust revitalization of the series’ signature side-scrolling action.
