While we definitely expected something to come out of the massive Microsoft x Activision Blizzard deal, it seems like the folks behind Diablo and World of Warcraft have other surprises. Blizzard has announced that it is set to develop a new AAA survival game, and it will be arriving on both PC and consoles.
In an announcement post, the company shared that “Blizzard is embarking on our next quest. We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, a place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived.”
“A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored. Every story needs a teller. And every world needs builders. What if that could be you?”
A new universe means that we won’t be seeing any of those Blizzard stalwarts, but perhaps some crossover content could eventually arrive in this new survival game from Blizzard. Having IPs like Starcraft and Warcraft sitting around is not exactly what fans want, and if Blizzard can rediscover their magical touch, fans will be back in droves once more.
It is clear that this new survival game will require plenty of work, and Blizzard is looking to actively hire for art, design, and engineering roles. Although the Microsoft acquisition looks set to give both Blizzard and the wider company a fresh slate, there are still problems to overcome.
The ongoing workplace harassment allegations are ongoing, while the general conditions are nothing to be proud of either. It remains to be seen just how this will affect the company in the long term.
