The world is your canvas but for some digital artists, it’s the tablet and stylus they bring everywhere they go. In the last few years, Apple’s iPad Pro (12.9-inch) has established itself as the go-to drawing device for digital artists, but with Samsung’s latest tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, there’s some worthy competition.
With a 14.6 inches display, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra provides ample space for artists to bring their creative visions to life. Plus, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor means the tablet is a powerhouse that won’t crash mid-drawing on software like Clip Studio Paint and HiPaint.
When drawing, it is evident that the AMOLED display has good colour reproduction too. Colours are vibrant and when compared to the iPad Pro 2022, the two are pretty similar.
Just like how the Apple Pencil is a common tool artists use to draw on the iPad, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra comes with its own stylus, the S-Pen. The S-pen features haptic audio that makes you feel like you’re drawing on real paper. It’s a cool feature worth noting without having to use a textured screen protector to recreate the touch and feel of paper.
That said, the S-Pen is smaller in size and doesn’t fit as well in our hands as compared to the Apple Pencil. While the large screen is a wonderful playground, the dimensions of the tablet make for an awkward drawing experience as it is not a canvas ratio most artists are used to. Our hands and limbs tend to get in the way when drawing though, it’s something that users can get used to over time.
In all, we find that the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is a great tablet for productivity and entertainment, but may not be the best choice for digital artists.
If you’re looking for a large, immersive tablet with a great display for productivity and note-taking, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is a very good option. However, serious digital artists may want to stick with the iPad Pro 2022. Samsung is clearly trying to create its own edge against the iPads and Apple pencil but Apple still takes the lead here with just the right screen size, higher processing power, the ergonomics of Apple Pencil, and the simplicity of the Apple ecosystem.
It just goes to show that bigger doesn’t always mean better, but with the Galaxy Tab S9 one thing is for sure: the perfect Samsung tablet for creators will definitely come sometime in the future.
