For the successful and long-running franchise that is Ubisoft‘s Assassin’s Creed series, its selling point has always been mixing history with its brand of action/stealth gameplay. After all, players have been transported to all sorts of places and time periods, from ancient Egypt in Origins, the British Isles in Valhalla, to Greece in Odyssey, just to name a few. But the outright popular choice has always been feudal Japan, and that will happen with Assassin’s Creed Codename Red.
What we don’t know is when that will come to fruition, but a recent report by Eurogamer seems to point towards a 2024 release, which isn’t that long a wait. The supposed scoop comes from a LinkedIn post shared by Access the Animus on Twitter about a Ubisoft marketing employee seeking sponsoring partners for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red in Japan.
The biggest takeaway is that the game was described as “the biggest blockbuster for 2024,” and also revealed that there will be a tie-in manga series and podcasts to help with its marketing. The post has since been amended to remove any mention of the year.
Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red is set in feudal Japan, with development led by Ubisoft Quebec director Jonathan Dumont. The objective for Ubisoft is for this game to be the “next premium flagship title” as well as “the future of [Ubisoft’s] open-world RPG games”.
While it is certainly exciting to know that players might just get a chance to visit Japan in Assassin’s Creed Codename Red next year, it is still unconfirmed news. Following the reveal of several projects back in September 2022, there are still quite a number of games that could potentially fill in the gap before this new adventure even begins, starting with Assassin’s Creed Mirage on 12 October.
For whatever it’s worth, this game is eventually going to come out, and that will go a long way to placate all the eager fans waiting for this journey.
