Anya Taylor-Joy, the Emmy-nominated actress known for her roles in The Queen’s Gambit and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, recently expressed her interest in playing Elsa in a potential live-action adaptation of Disney’s Frozen.
“It would be very fun to shoot ice out of your hand,” Taylor-Joy said in an interview with Vogue Hong Kong. “Also, you’d just be the favourite at every kid’s birthday party. All of my siblings have children now, so I would love for them to be able to say ‘My auntie is Elsa.’ That would be pretty sick.”
“I would love to do a musical because I’m a bit addicted to hard work. I like having an impossible mountain to climb. The idea of having to be able to sing, dance, and act at the same time would just really thrill me,” she added.
Frozen, which debuted in 2013, is based loosely on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen. The film, alongside its sequel, has grossed over US$2.7 billion worldwide, cementing its status as a modern Disney classic. It follows the story of Anna, who embarks on a perilous journey to reconnect with her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have inadvertently placed her at odds with the kingdom of Arendelle.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in November 2023 that the studio is working on Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, expanding the beloved franchise further. Although a live-action version of Frozen has not yet been announced, the success of Disney’s recent adaptations such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid suggests that bringing Elsa and Anna’s story to life in this format could be a future possibility.
Taylor-Joy’s interest in portraying Elsa could align well with Disney’s pattern of reimagining its animated classics for new audiences. Her passion for the role and readiness to embrace the complex demands of a musical performance make her a compelling candidate for the part, should the opportunity arise.
