Per Variety, Heidi Schreck, celebrated for her play What the Constitution Means to Me, has been enlisted to write and serve as an executive producer for the project.
The announcement signals a major step forward for the series, which has been in development since 2021 when Nicole Kassell was confirmed to direct at least one episode. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the animated series on Netflix, garnered critical acclaim with a 96% critics rating and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes during its five-season run. Amazon MGM aims to replicate this success in a live-action format, capitalising on the strong legacy of the character.
Originally debuting in 1985, She-Ra has undergone several revivals, with the most recent being the Netflix series that concluded after over fifty episodes. The live-action series will introduce a new narrative angle on She-Ra, focusing on an orphaned young woman leading a revolution to save her planet. While details about casting and release date remain undisclosed, the commitment to a fresh portrayal promises a distinct take on the heroine’s saga.
Heidi Schreck, who also contributed to series such as Nurse Jackie (2014-2015) and Billions (2016), brings a robust background in both stage and screenwriting to the series. Nicole Kassell, known for her directorial work on Watchmen (2019) and Westworld (2018), complements the creative team with her extensive experience in leading high-profile TV projects.
The resurgence of live-action adaptations of popular animations, like Netflix’s One Piece (2023) and Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) reflect a growing trend that Amazon MGM is tapping into. This move is part of a broader strategy that includes developing a live-action Masters of The Universe movie, with stars such as Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie already cast.
While the She-Ra live-action series is not intended as a continuation of the Netflix animated series, it marks the first time the character of Adora will appear in live-action. The original Masters of The Universe movie in 1987 featured many characters from the franchise but did not include She-Ra.
Fans of the franchise might also anticipate a potential crossover between the Masters of The Universe and She-Ra series, given their shared universe and the popularity of such narrative twists. However, specifics about how or when this might occur remain speculative.
