‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Scores US$99M Global Debut, Marks Franchise Best

As it turns out, A Quiet Place: Day One is anything but, well, quiet, at the box office. The thriller film has made waves with a global debut of US$98.5 million, with US$53 million coming from the U.S. market.

The tally marks a franchise-best opening, pushing it to No. 2 at the weekend box office in the U.S. behind Disney-Pixar’s billion-dollar blockbuster Inside Out 2. It’s worth noting that spin-offs don’t generate as much buzz as the direct or mainline sequels, so ticket sales are especially impressive in this case — more so without franchise creator John Krasinski at the helm. Emily Blunt, who starred in the first two outings, didn’t return as well.

Instead, Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave) and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things Season 4) lead A Quiet Place: Day One, which serves as a prequel in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic horror series. The original 2018 pic scored a US$50 million opening in the U.S., with its 2021 sequel, which debuted during the pandemic, earning US$48 million.

“We listened to the fans about what they’d be looking for,” says Paramount’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson. “This origin story, giving them a new city as the setting and fresh characters, all conspired to broaden the audience.”

Directed by Pig filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, A Quiet Place: Day One is set during the early stages of an invasion in New York City by extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. It has scared up the best figures in the series in nearly 25 markets, with Krasinski contributing to the story.

Gaming enthusiasts can also expect more thrills to come. A week before the movie’s theatrical release, PlayStation released a gameplay trailer for the upcoming A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, due to bow in on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later this year.
