Inde Navarrette Studied Screenwriting By Watching Anime Before ‘Obession’ Breakout Role

Inde Navarrette might be the new talk of the town thanks to her breakout role in Obsession, but there was a time before the film’s release that she wasn’t on anyone’s radar, with the 25-year-old actor explaining that she once studied storytelling and screenwriting by watching anime during the downtime before her eventual fame.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on her sudden fame and upcoming projects, including being cast as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film, Navarrette recalled that there was a period of time between completing the filming for Obsession and its eventual release when she was unsure of the future of her career.

During this time, most fans who have been following her journey would know that she made ends meet by streaming games on Twitch, such as Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us or the Call of Duty franchise, but now, the self-proclaimed nerd has admitted that she’s a bit of a weeb too, revealing that she also started studying film and TV by watching anime, specifically Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen.

“I transitioned into studying film and watching movies and asking, ‘Why do I like them?’ What I like is anime, so like, why do I like that?” she recalled. “I mean, Jujutsu Kaisen I find to be a very fascinating anime, but why is it so different than Demon Slayer? Why is it so different than other ones? With Jujutsu Kaisen, they play with timelines, right? With Demon Slayer, they don’t, it’s very linear. And what does that mean, and how does that affect storytelling?”

“I really dove into, ‘Why is Jujutsu Kaisen so good?’” she continued. “And I learned about timeline and about storytelling — how a person can have a monologue at the beginning of the episode that matters two episodes later or even at the end, and that person’s dead and you don’t learn it until then — and then attaching that to my screenwriting and trying to learn that way.”

From the way she describes analysing the entertainment she consumes in her everyday life, it’s clear that Navarrette is passionate about the film and TV industry, which is exactly why fans resonate with her so much. And with her upcoming role as Rogue, she also previously assured fans that she’s doing everything “humanly possible” to bring the character to life.

With this being just the start of her journey, perhaps a project in the anime field won’t be too far off, considering her love for the genre, and with the star also keen to explore avenues in voice acting, previously saying that one of her dream projects was to voice a character in her favourite game franchise, Resident Evil, maybe one day we’ll hear her voice in an English dub of an anime too.
