Extended ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Release Planned, Including Deleted Rosario Dawson Cameo

After a phenomenal box office run, Spidey may swing back into theatres for a second outing. Sony is reportedly working on a new cut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will feature extended, never-before-seen footage.

According to Deadline, the latest instalment in the Tom Holland-led franchise is expected to include Rosario Dawson‘s character, Claire Temple, who previously appeared in the first two seasons of Marvel TV’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders spin-off as a nurse who gives medical aid to vigilantes. The news comes after the Ahsoka star said in an interview that she had shot a scene for the superhero pic, but was ultimately cut from the current theatrical version. Additional details, including a release window and other surprises, remain under lock and key.

If the project comes to fruition, it won’t be the first time the webhead is getting the re-release treatment. 2022’s Spider-Man: No Way Home was followed by another iteration with extra scenes centred on all three Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Holland himself, adding 10 minutes to the runtime. A similar approach is likely in the works, even if the latter (re)released to mixed reception.

There’s also the elephant in the room: Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame Encore, a re-release of the 2019 film with all the new scenes that set up Doomsday, bowing on 18 December. It opened to a massive US$86 million global haul and pushed its current lifetime cume to US$2.88 billion, just behind James Cameron’s Avatar (US$2.92 billion). There are two different versions to catch — IMAX, which adds roughly three minutes of fresh footage, and Infinity Vision, the debut of Disney’s new premium large format certification that includes a four-minute sneak peek at Doomsday, on top of the base three minutes.

As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it now sits at a global tally of US$2.49 billion, with US$950.7 million coming from the domestic box office. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed feature dethroned its predecessor to become Sony’s highest-grossing title ever, and sees the titular webslinger continuing to protect New York City anonymously while investigating a powerful new threat, as his superpowers undergo a surprising and potentially dangerous evolution.
