More often than not, sequels take a while to take off, but Superman: Man of Tomorrow isn’t keen on slowing down. Writer and director James Gunn has announced a wrap on filming, celebrating the occasion with two behind-the-scenes photographs featuring Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and the crew.
“That’s a wrap on principal photography for ‘Man of Tomorrow,'” he wrote on Instagram. “Truly a joyful experience and I have immense gratitude to my cast and crew. First photo: [Nicholas Hoult] jumped in the lake after last shot. Second photo: The brain trust (except Brian) around video village during the whole shoot. They make making movies fun.”
Hoult won’t be the only familiar face in the follow-up to the 2025 film, slated for theatrical release on 9 July 2027. David Corenswet is returning as the Man of Steel, who will reluctantly join forces with Lex to face off against a new threat: the superintelligent Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger. Story details are kept under wraps, but the forthcoming instalment is set to introduce Aaron Pierre to the big screen as John Stewart, following the actor’s debut in HBO Max’s Lanterns series, which centres on the character and on Lantern Hal Jordan investigating a murder on Earth that leads to a wider mystery.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow will also mark a reunion between Pierre and Nathan Fillion, who returned as Guy Gardner in the show. Other returning cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is set for a reappearance, with Gunn previously describing her as a “major part of what we’re doing”, after her solo turn earlier in June.
Leading up to the film’s release, DC Studios will first roll out Clayface on 23 October. Written by horror auteur Mike Flanagan, the origin-story feature stars Tom Rhys Harries in the titular role and represents the studio’s first foray into the genre. Once Man of Tomorrow flies in cinemas on 9 July 2027, the first chapter of its superhero slate is set to continue with The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and an untitled Wonder Woman project.
