The box office continues to be dominated by Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, with the former now at US$1.67 billion worldwide after two weekends, while the latter has become the filmmaker’s highest-grossing movie ever at US$1.1 billion.
As reported by Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day added US$145 million domestically over its second weekend, marking the third-highest second weekend gross at the domestic box office behind 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens (US$149 million) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (US$147 million). In addition, it is now one of only eight movies to surpass US$100 million in their sophomore outings.
Following its staggering US$927 million opening weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day now sits at US$1.67 billion (US$654.3M domestic and US$1.013B overseas), making the US$2 billion box office milestone within its reach.
Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the “most truthful version” of the webslinger (Tom Holland) as he continues to protect New York City anonymously and investigates a powerful new threat, all while his superpowers undergo a surprising and potentially dangerous evolution. Also reprising their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal, joining newcomers Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas, Marvin Jones, and more.
The Marvel flick wasn’t the only one to break records this box office weekend, as The Odyssey added another US$31.5 million over its fourth weekend, bringing its total to US$1.1 billion worldwide and making it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie of all time, overtaking 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises (US$1.08 billion) and 2009’s The Dark Knight (US$1.008 billion). The film has also become IMAX’s highest-grossing release of all time with US$289 million in sales, surpassing the previous record holder, 2009’s Avatar (US$271 million).
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, who undergoes a long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War and encounters mythical beings as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Hathaway), and his son, Telemachus (Holland). Other members of the star-studded cast include Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, and Samantha Morton.
Rounding off the top five weekend box office earners were Universal’s romantic comedy One Night Only (US$5.7 million), filmmaker Will Gluck’s latest film following 2023’s Anyone but You, comedy sequel Super Troopers 3 (US$4 million), and Disney’s Toy Story 5 (US$3.9 million), which has earned a worldwide total of US$470.3 million to date.
