God of War Laufey, Santa Monica Studio’s PlayStation 5 action-adventure game focused on the journey of Kratos’ wife through the afterlife, has now landed a release date of 16 February 2027, and while the god killer himself has taken a back seat this time, the studio has also announced that he is set to return for his next adventure afterwards.
Announced during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026, the game not only received its release date, but also the confirmation that it would be shipping physical disk versions too, which follows Sony’s controversial announcement that it would be ending production of physical PlayStation discs from 2028, sparking massive backlash in the gaming community.
In addition, Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog also dropped the announcement that the next mainline Kratos-led God of War title will come after Laufey, and while no further details on the title were announced, it will connect directly with Faye’s story, so fans can rest easy that the tale of Kratos is far from over.
“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” he explained during the panel. “It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”
God of War Laufey was unveiled during PlayStation’s State of Play showcase in June 2026, with its initial gameplay trailer drawing mixed reactions from fans. While many praised the fluidity of Faye’s acrobatic combat, criticism was targeted at its more colourful world design, noticeably less violent action, and the fact that the God of War himself wasn’t centre stage.
Santa Monica is clearly aware of these fan concerns, with Barlog and God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence coming forward to clarify that Kratos will remain the face of God of War moving forward via a video interview shortly after the trailer’s release. Apart from the untitled next chapter in Kratos’ story, the studio is also going back to his roots, with a God of War Trilogy remake in the works that brings his first three adventures to the modern age.
