Now that the second season of Prime Video’s Fallout series brought the post-apocalyptic action to New Vegas, it was only a matter of time before the city got a makeover. As part of a roadmap reveal for the foreseeable future, Bethesda has announced that Fallout 3 and New Vegas are getting remastered for modern platforms, following years of speculation.
No additional details, including a release date, were shared, but more content lies in store both in and outside of the Wasteland. “Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now,” said the company in an official post, before confirming that the next mainline instalment has entered pre-production in a different section.
The list includes the Raven Rock expansion for Fallout 76, which serves as a prequel to the third game, an unscripted Fallout Shelter television project from Amazon Studios and Kilter Films, a new title from longtime collaborator Obsidian Entertainment, and a special programme for the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2027. That year, Fallout Day, which takes place annually on 23 October, the date of the Great War in series lore, will be celebrated live in Washington, DC.
As for Fallout 5, much of it also remains under wraps. The game is being developed on Bethesda’s Creation Engine 3 shared technology platform alongside The Elder Scrolls VI — now the studio’s “primary development focus today.” Among the other updates are an expanded Settled Systems with new stories for Starfield players, new experiences in The Elder Scrolls Online, and ongoing production on Season 3 of Fallout.
Originally released in 2008, Fallout 3 follows a 19-year-old Vault dweller in search of their missing father against the setting of the Washington metropolitan area 200 years after a devastating nuclear war. New Vegas arrived two years later, focusing on a courier who survives an assassination attempt and becomes embroiled in a conflict between different governing factions that are vying for control of the region.
