As reported by Variety, Glover, formerly known by his musical stage name Childish Gambino, will attempt his best rendition of Yoshi’s now iconic high-pitched voice, and will also be joined by other newly added stars, including Luis Guzman (Wednesday) as Wart and Issa Rae (Barbie) as Honey Queen.

The casting was also announced alongside a new trailer, which offers a better look at the movie’s plot. Shining a spotlight on its newest villain, Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie), the film centres around the young Bowser ripping apart the galaxy, specifically Princess Peach’s (Anya Taylor-Joy) castle, in a plot to save his father from the Mario brothers. The trailer also offers a first look at classic characters like Wart, the toad-like main villain from the 1988 game Super Mario Bros. 2.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see other returning faces from 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movielike Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson), alongside new characters like Rosalina (Brie Larson).

The sequel is set to raise the stakes significantly, as following Bowser’s defeat in the previous film, Mario, Luigi, Peach and the gang must now embark on another adventure that transports them into various planets, exploring familiar sights from the gaming franchise such as the Sand Kingdom seen in 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey, alongside a casino-like location which looks to be inspired by a level from 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will once again be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and will hit theatres on 1 April 2026.
