Square Enix’s ‘Dissidia Final Fantasy’ Fighting Game Returns After 8 Years On Mobile Only

Square Enix has announced that its Dissidia Final Fantasy crossover fighting game series will be making a return after eight years in the form of a new mobile title.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (2015)

Revealed via a newly opened website, the game is described as a “Team Boss Battle Arena” game for iOS and Android, with more information to go live on 14 October at 7pm JST (6pm SGT). For now, the website also lists a teaser image comprising various character silhouettes, including series favourites like Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy 13’s Lightning, and Final Fantasy 15’s Prompto.

This new title marks the second game in the franchise released exclusively on mobile platforms, following 2017’s Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. The series launched globally in 2009 as a PSP fighting game that featured battles between Final Fantasy heroes and villains. Its sequel, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, launched on the same platform in 2011, followed by a Japanese arcade game in 2015 that would go on to be ported to consoles under the title Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia (2017)

Square Enix’s decision to stick with the mobile platform does bring a set of stigma along with it, such as egregious monetisation and gachapon-style mechanics, but judging from the positive reception of Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, theres a chance that this new title will follow in the same positive footsteps, although specific details of the title such as gameplay or monetisation systems still remain to be seen, and might be revealed when the game’s trailer drops on 14 October.
