‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Mobile Port Reportedly In The Works At Tencent And Square Enix

As Square Enix’s fan-favourite MMO enjoys a host of new content with the release of its Dawntrail DLC, it seems even more players are set to step into the world in the near future. According to a forum post on Exputer, the publisher has reportedly joined forces with Tencent to develop a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV.

Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but it’s worth noting that the two companies formed a strategic alliance back in 2018. “We are in ongoing communications with Tencent, and there are some projects that are underway but I will refrain from commenting on any details at present, including in terms of any output over the next three years,” said Square Enix’s president Yosuke Matsuda in 2021.

It’s also currently unknown if the title will be available on all devices, and neither party have formerly confirmed what these projects are. However, a Final Fantasy XIV mobile game is thought to be the top choice after an unannounced Nier title was shelved last year. If true, the release aligns with director Naoki Yoshida’s goal to bring the beloved MMO to more players.

“My dream, or goal, for more than ten years at this point is for players to be able to play Final Fantasy XIV regardless of device and access the servers to go in and access the same world,” said Yoshi-P, as known to fans, when asked on the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 debut. The successor to Nintendo’s home console is currently planned for 2025.

Dawntrail is the latest expansion to grace Final Fantasy XIV, following 2015’s Heavensward, 2017’s Stormblood, 2019’s Shadowbringers, and 2021’s Endwalker. It went live on 2 July, introducing new allies, enemies, and places to explore, as well as new jobs to learn in the continent of Tural, known in Eorzea as the New World.

Apologising for early access issues plaguing the game’s launch, Yoshida said, “Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has been playing Dawntrail since the start of early access. However, I would like to offer my sincere apologies regarding the issues that we have identified and listed below. Please let me explain the status of the investigation behind their causes and the measures we plan to take to address them.”
