Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Project Will Expand The Universe With New Characters

While most people will be looking forward to the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder from director Taika Waititi, it is important to remember he will also be working on a new Star Wars film. For fans of the space opera, you might be wondering just what that entails, and in an interview with Total Film, Waititi shed more light on what his take on Star Wars will be like.

The director made it quite clear that he won’t be depending on pre-existing storylines, lore, or canon, and will instead pursue something new to flesh out the universe even more.

“I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,” he explained. “I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother’.

“That all stands alone. That’s great. Though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”

How this will be delivered in his own unique style remains to be seen, with both Disney and Taika Waititi himself keeping the details of the new Star Wars film extremely close to their chests. However, it is still slated for a late 2023 release, so the wait is not exactly that long. Nevertheless, for those worried that their beloved characters might go in a direction they don’t agree with, at least Waititi will not add to their fears with the new film.
