Hit ‘99 Nights in the Forest’ Roblox Game Is Latest Hollywood Adaptation

20th Century Studios is setting its sights on another video game film adaptation, this time taking on the global gaming sensation Roblox with a movie based on the massively popular 99 Nights in the Forest.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this marks the first time the studio has tackled a video game adaptation since producing 2015’s Hitman: Agent 47 and 2016’s Assassin’s Creed, back when it was still under Fox. The game’s developers, Alec Kieft, Matthew Hufton, and Cameron Angland, will serve as executive producers, although no director or writer has been attached to the project so far.

Hosted on Roblox and developed by Grandma’s Favourite Games, 99 Nights in the Forest is a survival game that tasks players with rescuing four children in a haunted forest while surviving 99 nights, all while being hunted by creatures. The game is less than a year old, but has already become the seventh most played game within Roblox, with a 14.2 million all-time peak player count and a 90.6 per cent player rating.

“Growing up, Disney and 20th films were a huge part of our childhood, so collaborating with such legendary and enduring studios feels surreal,” said the game’s creators in a statement. “We’re excited to explore the world of 99 Nights in the Forest on a broader stage and to create some scares in an entirely new medium.”

In what looks to be fueled by the successes of movies like Universal’s 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie or the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, video game adaptations have been a rising trend in Hollywood lately, popping up left and right with varying levels of success. The 99 Nights in the Forest marks just the latest in upcoming adaptations, joining the likes of Columbia Pictures’ The Legend of Zelda, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, and Paramount’s Street Fighter.
