1996 SNES Classic ‘Super Mario RPG’ Gets Nintendo Switch Remake For November Launch

Every time there is a Nintendo Direct, fans of the beloved Japanese gaming company always get excited about what’s coming next, and there usually is good reason to. The most recent showing certainly didn’t disappoint those looking for a good old Mario fix, and for roleplaying aficionados, the announcement of a remake of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars would have made quite an impact.

First released close to three decades ago, this remake will arrive on the Nintendo Switch this coming 17 November, and will just be called Super Mario RPG. Based on what was shown off, it will likely be a very faithful reimagining of the classic, including its battle system, albeit with an updated art style.

As Nintendo describes it, Super Mario RPG will see Mario, Bowser, and Peach partner up to repair the wish-granting Star Road in an “approachable role-playing adventure.” The three will join forces with other characters like Mallow and Geno to stop the troublemaking Smithy Gang and their evil boss, the appropriately named Smithy. The action will unfold both on the platforming front, but also in turn-based combat, a staple of the RPG genre.

The announcement of this remake was not the only big news that came out of the Nintendo Direct. There will also be a remake of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for 2024, a new 2D platformer in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and reveals of Detective Pikachu 2, Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 1, WarioWare: Move It! and more. We also got more Pikmin 4 details ahead of its 28 June launch.

All in all, it was a substantial showing by Nintendo, and for this particular gamer, the upcoming release of Super Mario RPG ranks high on the list of things to look forward to for the second half of 2023.
