WB Games ‘Hogwarts Legacy 2’ Will Tie Into HBO’s Harry Potter TV Series

Hogwarts Legacy 2, the sequel to Warner Bros. Games 2023 smash-hit wizarding adventure that is currently in development, has been confirmed to feature story tie-ins to HBO’s Harry Potter TV series.

This reveal comes courtesy of David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, who spoke with Variety on the future of Harry Potter, explaining how the positive reception of Hogwarts Legacy played a key factor in generating renewed interest in the franchise, and as a result, following up on the video game’s success has become a high priority for the company.

“We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that,” he said. “Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep Harry Potter fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them.”

To this end, Haddad not only confirmed that the team is hard at work on developing a sequel game but also that it will feature story connections to HBO’s upcoming adaptation, with the team “coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the series coming from Warner Bros. Television.”

This move is certainly warranted, with Avalance Software and Portkey Games’ Hogwarts Legacy selling over 30 million copies worldwide since its February 2023 launch, becoming the bestselling game in the United States, and the second-bestselling in Europe that same year. The development of a sequel was subsequently announced by Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels during the Bank of America’s 2024 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in September this year.

The success has been a major boon to the Harry Potter franchise, with Warner Bros. struggling in recent years with its Fantastic Beasts Potter spin-off, which spanned across three big-budget films in 2016, 2018 and 2022, all of which failed to garner much success at the box office. Jude Law, who played a young Dumbledore in the movies, also spoke with Variety on the unlikeliness that subsequent movies in the series would be made.

Riding on the success of Hogwarts Legacy and the hype for the upcoming TV show, here’s hoping that Warner Bros. can push the franchise forward with the upcoming game sequel, bringing in a new gamer demographic to the Wizarding World.
