Warner Bros. co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy had previously indicated that that the studio plans to veer away from the ‘traditional’ Peter Jackson LOTR formula to delve deeper into the unexplored universe dreamt up by J.R.R. Tolkien. With the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit under the ownership of Swedish video game and media holding company Embracer Group, there were also plans to expand the fantasy world by producing spin-off films starring Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, and more. It is unclear if those plans remain.
