Prior to the Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond release (which consists of Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings so far), the original Doctor Who Collectible Card Game, launched in 1996, is a product best left forgotten by the passage of time.
Fast forward to 2023, the latest Doctor Who Universes Beyond set for Magic: The Gathering seeks to rope in even more players into the space. Given the success of Lord of the Rings, Wizards of the Coast will be looking to capture the attention of potential players who would love to play as their favorite doctor in real life.
Getting hold of all thirteen doctors within a single collector booster box is an easily achievable feat but getting hold of all their companions is another story altogether.
For the truly devoted Doctor Who fans, getting your favourite doctor in the unique Tardis card frame treatment is another aspect of the set to chase down. Thankfully, the distribution of the cards has been generous and it would not be hard to complete a set of these variants with one box and a spot of trading.
While the Doctor Who set might not be legal in competitive formats of the wider Magic: The Gathering game, the 200-card set release forms a unique bubble for new players to understand more about Magic as a whole. The mechanics found in the entire set are straightforward and filled with time-related flavour which fans will feel at home with. Each of the cards in the Doctor Who set will consist of unique artwork and there are even essential reprints that many entrenched Magic: The Gathering would consider picking up as well.
