‘The Witcher 4’ Will Bring Back Geralt, But Won’t Focus On Him

As one chapter ends, another begins. The Witcher trilogy of games was a glorious send-off for Geralt of Rivia, but that doesn’t mean he won’t ever return to the game universe. Good news for fans of the franchise: voice actor Doug Cockle has more or less confirmed the character’s appearance in The Witcher 4, the next mainline entry codenamed Polaris.

While no specifics were given, he revealed to Fall Damage that the White Wolf is set to star, though not as the protagonist. “I can’t say anything about [Polaris],” he said, “What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game – we just don’t know how much – and the game won’t focus on Geralt.

“It’s not about him this time. We don’t know who it’s about. I’m excited to find out. I want to know. I have not seen any script yet. I mean, I couldn’t tell you if I did. This is the thing, so I could be lying through my teeth. But I’m not. Or am I?”

Little else is known about The Witcher 4, initially announced in 2022. With only a single teaser image showing a lynx medallion to go on, fans have speculated that Ciri may step in as the main character. It’s a logical guess – not only does the pendant resemble her own’s, which takes after the School of the Cat, the comics considered canon to CD Projekt Red’s universe show her as a witcher. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this is one of the three endings for Geralt’s protégé; the other two see her becoming the Empress of Nilfgaard, or dying.

Regardless, it’ll likely take some time before more information about the upcoming RPG surfaces. The good news is that it’s now the main project being worked on at the studio, with development ramped up to include a total of 403 staffers on the team.
