‘Star Citizen’ Spin-Off ‘Squadron 42’ On Track For 2026 Release Says Developer

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), developers behind Star Citizen, has announced that its spin-off, Squadron 42, is on track for a 2026 release date.

As part of CitizenCon 2024, CIG head Chris Roberts revealed more information about the single-player story-driven standalone space adventure, mentioning that the team is “confident” for its release in 2026 and that the game will offer more than 30 hours of gameplay.

Roberts’ announcement followed a live gameplay demo of the title, which unfortunately suffered from multiple crashes and bugs. “We did say we were doing it live, risking the demo gods, and they brought their wrath down on us,” Roberts commented, “We feel confident we can bring the quality of the game up to the level we’ve just shown and more, without crashes.”

The demo featured a lengthy portion of the game’s prologue, consisting of flashy cutscenes mixed with both on-rails and first-person shooting segments while showcasing its star-studded cast of Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, and Henry Cavill. “Crashes aside, there’s probably not another game that has a prologue that has that much action,” said Roberts.

Star Citizen, and by extension, Squadron 42, remains one of the most drawn-out video game projects to date, with over 12 years since its initial crowdfunding campaign launched, and more than US$729 million raised to date. Its tumultuous development journey has also led many to question if the full game would ever see the light of day.

In any case, fans still have a long wait to go before Squadron 42’s supposed release date in 2026. Star Citizen, on the other hand, remains in its Alpha stage of development.
