Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently announced that the highly anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is set to premiere in late 2025.
This new addition to George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe, currently in pre-production, will debut on Max. Crafted by creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin, the series is inspired by the Dunk & Egg novellas, unfolding a century prior to the events of Game of Thrones.
Spotlighting the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard), and his squire, Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen), as they traverse Westeros. With a backdrop where the Targaryen dynasty still claims the Iron Throne and dragons are not yet relegated to myth, the series promises a tapestry of grand destinies, formidable adversaries, and perilous journeys.
The ensemble cast for The Hedge Knight remains under wraps, but the project signals HBO’s intention to deliver a consistent stream of Thrones drama annually. This strategy seems more plausible with House of the Dragon gearing up for its second season this summer, suggesting HBO might alternate releases between the two series.
In addition to The Hedge Knight, HBO is exploring other stories within Martin’s expansive universe, including an Aegon’s Conquest prequel by The Batman: Part II writer Mattson Tomlin. However, House of the Dragon and The Hedge Knight are the only projects currently greenlit.
This initiative is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader strategy to enrich HBO’s lineup, boasting an array of anticipated titles such as Hacks, House of the Dragon, DC’s The Penguin, and the new Dune series. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight joins this impressive roster, promising to usher in 2025 with high fantasy and intrigue.
Developed by Martin and Ira Parker, and executive produced alongside House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis, The Hedge Knight aims to capture the essence of the beloved Dunk and Egg tales. With its launch, HBO continues to expand the Game of Thrones legacy, offering fans new realms to explore within the iconic fantasy universe.
