‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Opening Sequence Dazzles With Retro Anime Charm

There’s no better way to hype up a show about a cool rock band than have some killer rock music in its promotional material, and that’s what exactly Netflix did. The streamer has dropped the full opening sequence for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the upcoming animated adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved graphic novels (and Edgar Wright’s live-action cult favourite), and it’s plenty stylish.

Decked out in retro anime charm, it pays homage to the iconic Sex Bob-Omb opening credits from the 2010 live-action hit. The sequence is scored to “bloom” from Japanese rock band Necry Talkie, against the foreground of grungy, striking visual effects and whimsical elements like Scott’s seven evil exes and Ramona’s hammer.

Science SARU, the studio behind Devil Man Crybaby, is responsible for the glorious animation work, which offers a tantalising tease of the series. Alongside the opener, fans can also expect original songs and score by Anamanaguchi, the chiptune band behind the soundtrack of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World video game.

The synopsis for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off  is as follows:

“Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and discovers he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. But this time, things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off revisits and reimagines the beloved cult classic, taking Ramona Flowers, her evil exes, Scott, and his friends off on a mysterious new action-packed journey to find love.”
