ROG Debuts New Strix SCAR 17 SE And Flow X16 Gaming Laptops

Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced two new laptops, adding to its 2022 lineup — the ROG Strix SCAR 17 Special Edition (SE) and the ROG Flow X16, both high-performance gaming laptops for discerning users.

It also launched SCAR Runner, an expansion to the free-to-play first-person shooter ROG Citadel XV, along with a giveaway campaign.

ROG Strix SCAR 17 Special Edition (SE)

The Strix SCAR 17 SE builds on what the SCAR 17, announced earlier in 2022, is already good at, which is gaming on a small form factor.

Equipped with a 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12950HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop 16GB GPU, along with its cooling system, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 SE can reach a maximum CPU Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 65W and a maximum GPU TGP of 175W (25W higher than the regular SCAR 17).

Generally, the higher the figure, the faster and longer it can run under heavy loads, so this puts the laptop in a good spot for performance.

Its 17.3-inch screen offers either a 1920 x 1080 at 360Hz, or 2560 x 1440 at 240Hz, both at 3ms response time, for clear motion clarity during gameplay. The combination of a 64GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM and PCIe Gen 4 SSD means you won’t have to worry about loading times, either.

The laptop features a distinct cyberpunk-ish aesthetic, with a first-of-its-kind invisible ink applied directly to its metal chassis. It has a matte metallic texture in normal lighting, but turns green and blue under UV. It hides a secret, meant for its newly launched SCAR Runner parkour game (more below).

ROG Flow X16

The convertible Flow X16 laptop is equipped with AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor and an NVIDIA GeForece RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU, with support for XG Mobile family of external GPUs.

This support makes it possible to power the laptop with a more powerful external GPU in the future, assuming the RTX 3070 could no longer do its job (which is unlikely to happen until a few years down the road).

It has the flagship ROG Nebula HDR display, going up to 2560×1600 resolution at 165Hz in its 16-inch mini LED panel. It reaches a whopping 1,100 nits at peak brightness and has a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

The whole package is in a chassis 19.4-mm thick and weighs 2.1 kg. Like its siblings, it sports a 360-degree hinge that allows it to perform as a traditional clamshell laptop, a tablet, or anything in between.

SCAR Runner Expansion for ROG Citadel XV

An expansion to ROG Citadel XV, the first-person parkour SCAR Runner has you play as character X, vaulting through locations to recover critical information. The game has ties to the newly launched ROG Strix SCAR 17 Special Edition, with hidden clues found in the invisible ink used on the chassis.

There is a giveaway campaign going along with the game’s launch, which offers the public a shot at winning a Strix laptop and ROG Slash apparel as part of its S$20,000 prize cache. It runs from 17 May to 30 June 2022, with more details available on the campaign microsite.
