Ahead of Season 9 of the Adult Swim series Rick and Morty, the popular show is now being turned into an animated feature film from Warner Bros.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, longtime series director Jacob Hair is also in talks to helm the feature, although the film is still in its early stages of development and thus no plot details have been revealed yet. Still, the show’s co-creator, Dan Harmon, had previously expressed interest in creating a “super badass” feature-length episode for quite some time now, so it seems things are all coming together.
The Rick and Morty series was created by Harmon and Justin Roiland, rising since its debut in 2013 to become one of the most-watched comedy series of all time. centred on inventor Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty, the show follows their adventures as they travel across the universe, encountering all sorts of realities and trouble along the way.
The sitcom’s two main protagonists were both voiced by Roiland before he exited the series in 2023 amid felony domestic abuse charges that have since been dismissed, with Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden taking over to voice Rick and Morty, respectively. Additionally, the show also features the vocal talent of Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke, so it remains to be seen whether any of them will return for the upcoming feature film.

Announcement of the movie also comes in time with Rick and Morty’s ninth season, which premieres on 24 May 2026, while the show is also being renewed for a further three seasons. President Curtis, a spinoff series featuring actor Keith David in its titular role, is also set to premiere soon from Adult Swim.
