Retro ‘Golden Axe’ Game Gets Animated Series

’90s kids might remember playing Golden Axe at the arcade, and while seeing an arcade with the game in the wild is an achievement in the current era, there’s good news for the franchise. Golden Axe is the latest retro game to get an animated series, greenlit by Comedy Central with co-creators Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler producing.

The game is a hack-and-slash side scroller where players control one of three warriors seeking revenge on the cruel dictator Death Adder, as they fight his army to eventually reach the villain. A new game was announced in 2023, but no updates have surfaced since.

Golden Axe’s voice cast was also announced, with Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as Gilius Thunderhead, a seasoned axe-wielding dwarf warrior determined to avenge his twin brother Liam McIntyre (The Flash) voices barbarian Axe Battler, who joins the party to find his mother’s killer, and Lisa Gilroy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) voices Tyris Flare, a talented sorceress who lost her parents to Death Adder.

Comedy Central ordered ten episodes of the series, and its official synopsis reads: Golden Axe follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won’t seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib (Danny Pudi) on their side.

We’re looking forward to see the Golden Axe animated series come to life, so stay tuned for more updates!
