Remedy’s ‘Control 2’ Shifts Genre From Shooter To Action RPG

The Oldest House is beckoning once again, as Remedy Entertainment has shared a vital new piece of information about Control 2, the sequel to its 2019 supernatural shooter – that it will be an action RPG (role playing game).

The news arrives via the Capital Markets Day investor presentation on 19 November, which revealed some tidbits on not only Control, but Remedy’s other franchises too, like Alan Wake. Perhaps most interesting of all was a single slide revealing Control 2 to be of the action RPG genre, with deviates from the action-adventure template of its predecessor.

This was also further confirmed by the company via a post on BlueSky, which also overlays the other key points from the presentation: Alan Wake 2 selling over 1.8 million copies, Control Ultimate Edition hitting Mac on 12 February 2025, and Control receiving a free update next year that will unlock “previously released content.”

So what can fans expect from this new genre shift? Since no further details have been revealed as of yet, it currently falls to pure speculation on what to expect from the sequel. The original game was a third-person shooter, so it’s highly likely that this would remain unchanged, but the shift to an action RPG format could possibly lean towards a larger focus on player choice in terms of decision making, ability customisation and potentially even a gear system (as opposed to the original only featuring different skins).

For now, we can only wait with bated breath for more information to be revealed about Control 2, but in the meanwhile, Remedy has also recently revealed its first multiplayer game, FBC: Firebreak (previously codenamed Condor), a four-player cooperative FPS set in the same universe. Currently, FBC: Firebreak is in “full production,” while Control 2 is in “production readiness”.
