China’s Play For Dream Sets Global Launch Of Mixed Reality Android MR Headset In Singapore

Play For Dream Technology, a Shanghai-based spatial entertainment company, is rolling out its Play for Dream MR (Mixed Reality) Headset. Having dipped their toes with an earlier foray of their own virtual reality headsets, the market has since shifted with the darling in the spotlight being the Apple Vision Pro.

Play For Dream’s Android-based MR headset made its debut in Singapore and the company is gunning towards an October 2024 launch window for Singapore and Malaysia. Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, will see its own launch sometime in 2025.

The headset boasts impressive specs consisting of an 8K Micro-OLED screen and Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 CPU at the heart of the device. Weighing in at 288 grams for the headset alone, the Play For Dream MR headset fits snugly when placed on the head, the weight distribution was balanced as we navigated the demo room.

The Play for Dream MR touts a screen size to over 1,000 inches in a 3840×3552 resolution consisting of 3882 pixels per inch across a 103-degree field of view. This all translates into a high level of clarity across a variety of content types from movie trailers to event footage.

To navigate between menus on the headset, users have input options in the form of physical controller or gesture controls.

The greatest upside of the headset right now would its ability to stream and connect with a Windows PC giving users access to a wealth of gaming content through Steam.  The entire Windows desktop is mirrored into the headset allowing users layout their windows and multitask like a pro.

“Singapore is one of the most innovative cities in the world and a preferred hub for many cutting-edge technology companies. We hope to embark on our global expansion from here and influence the Asia Pacific region over time,” shared Huang Feng, Founder and CEO of Play for Dream Technology as the company announced that it would be launching its marketing headquarters in Singapore.

All that remains to be seen is the eventual price the Play for Dream MR would launch at but it is teased to be at US$1X99. Considering that the Apple Vision Pro costs S$5,299 in Singapore, the Play for Dream MR could price itself competitively to draw in early adopters.
