Paramount Rebooting ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’

Horror icon Freddy Krueger is back to haunt the dreams of yet another unfortunate group of teenagers as Paramount Pictures is working on a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie following a deal with the estate of Wes Craven.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio closed the deal for the US rights to the original screenplay of the original 1984 film, A Nightmare on Elm Street, which was written and directed by Craven. Craven’s widow, Iya Labunka, and his son Jonathan Craven will also produce this new iteration alongside attorney-turned-producer Marc Toberoff.

The Nightmare on Elm Street movie will hail from Paramount Primal, the studio’s new genre label, and while no details on this iteration have been revealed, it has been described as being “set in the world of A Nightmare on Elm Street, based on the original screenplay.” The studio’s leads, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, will also serve as the project’s executive producers.

“We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans,” said Labunka in a statement. “We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long-overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds.”

The original movie centred on Krueger, a child killer who was burned alive but returns as a vengeful undead being who murders teenagers through their dreams. The movie starred Robert Englund as Krueger, and the character quickly became a slasher icon thanks to his iconic burnt face and razor gloves, alongside his red and green sweater and fedora. The film would go on to spawn seven sequels, a TV series, and a reboot in 2010.
