Oscars 2024: ‘Barbenheimer’ Leads Academy Awards Shortlist Across 10 Categories

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the shortlists for 10 categories for the 96th Oscars ceremony, highlighting standout films and performances.

The shortlists cover various categories, including documentary feature film, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song, animated and live-action short films, sound, and visual effects. Films like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Color Purple, and The Zone of Interest are prominent across multiple lists.

Notably, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie leads with five mentions, including sound, original song, and original score, though it missed out on makeup and hairstyling.

Surprises in the makeup and hairstyling category include selections like Beau is Afraid and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. In music categories, compositions by Daniel Pemberton, Ludwig Göransson, and Robbie Robertson stand out, along with works by Thomas Newman and John Williams.

The diversity among composers is notable, with Jon Batiste, Kris Bowers, Laura Karpman, and Mica Levi making the shortlist. The original song category features two tracks each from The Color Purple and Flora and Son, with Olivia Rodrigo and Lenny Kravitz also moving closer to Oscar nominations.

In the documentary feature, frontrunners like Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, American Symphony, and The Eternal Memory secured spots. The international feature race saw no major surprises, with expected films like The Zone of Interest and Society of the Snow being shortlisted.
