‘One Piece’ Season 2 Starts Production, Marks Return Of Alvida, Buggy & Gold Roger

It’s full steam ahead for the Straw Hat Pirates, as Netflix has announced that Season 2 of its One Piece live-action adaptation is now starting production. A cast video reuniting the crew was released in celebration of the news, showing  Iñaki Godoy (Luffy), Mackenyu (Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero (Usopp) and Taz Skylar (Sanji) onboard the Going Merry pirate ship set in South Africa.

The update comes after a series of cast announcements, starting with the Baroque Works agents. In the forthcoming season, Daniel Lasker (Raised by WolvesVagrant Queen), playing Mr. 9, will be joined by Camrus Johnson (BatwomanQuiz Lady), Jazzara Jaslyn (WarriorLioness), and David Dastmalchian (AnimalsLate Night With the Devil) as Mr. 5, Miss Valentine, and Mr. 3 respectively.

The subsequent wave of additions revealed Brendan Sean Murray (Raised by Wolves) as Brogy, Callum Kerr (Monarch) as Smoker, Clive Russell (Game of Thrones) as Crocus, Julia Rehwald (Fear Street: Part One) as Tashigi, Rob Collletti (The Many Saints of Newark) as Wapol, Ty Keogh (Black Sails) as Dalton, and Werner Coetser (Getroud met rugby) as Dorry.

Alongside the original Straw Hats, Netflix also confirmed the returns of Ilia Isorelys Paulino as Alvida, Jeff Ward as Buggy, and Michael Dorman as Gold Roger. This won’t be a surprise for fans of the source material, as they appear in an early part of the Arabasta Arc, which One Piece Season 2 is expected to cover.

The series, based on Eiichiro Oda’s highly-popular manga series, debuted in August last year. It was quickly renewed for Season 2 after topping Netflix’s English-language TV charts with 18.5 million views for its premiere, and landing the No. 1 spot in 46 countries. The sequel is currently eyeing a 2025 release, with Tony Tony Chopper, a three-foot-tall human/reindeer hybrid, set to excite fans with his debut.

As for the long-running anime adaptation, a “fresh new remake” is currently in the works at the streamer. WIT Studio, the powerhouse behind Spy x Family and the Attack on Titan‘s first three seasons, is handling the animation for the project titled The One Piece. It will follow the same story as its progenitor, though there’s no word on a release date, episode count, or casting details.
