Not much is known about Naughty Dog’s next single-player game in the works, but now, fans are getting a good indication of things to come. Legendary voice actor Troy Baker will star in the untitled project, set to be helmed by Neil Druckmann, best known for his work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us game franchises.
Speaking to GQ, Baker spoke about his journey to becoming one of gaming’s most recognisable voices, with an extensive portfolio garnered over the years including The Last of Us, BioShock: Infinite and Batman: Arkham Origins, before confirming his return for Druckmann’s new project at Naughty Dog.
“In a heartbeat I would always work with Troy,” Druckmann is quoted as saying, and it shows. Baker has done extensive work with the Naughty Dog head over the years, famously portraying Joel from 2013’sThe Last of Us and its 2020 sequel, along with playing Samuel Drake in 2016’s Uncharted 4.
So what’s in store for Naughty Dog’s next major single-player experience? For now, details are scarce. Last December, the studio cancelled their online multiplayer-focused The Last of Us spin-off in favour of focusing on single-player narrative experiences, while also confirming that the team had “more than one ambitious, brand new single-player game that [they’re] working on”, but nothing has been revealed on any of the titles since then.
One thing’s for sure it’s highly unlikely that the title in question will be part of the Last of Us universe, with the team also clarifying during an interview in June this year that it “[would] not be The Last of Us studio forever”. With this in mind, plus the fact that their other major IP, Uncharted, has come to a close in terms of storyline, it’s safe to say that their upcoming title would likely be an original project, leaving some creative freedom to build something incredible.
In the meantime, Baker will crack the whip as the iconic fedora-wearing adventurer Indiana Jones in Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is heading to Xbox Series X|S and PC on 9 December 2024, with a PlayStation 5 version coming in 2025.
