‘Mortal Kombat II’ Delayed To May 2026

It’s back to the character select screen for Warner Bros. sequel, Mortal Kombat II, as the film has been pushed back from its slated release date on 24 October and is now scheduled to premiere on 15 May 2026 instead.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this move that was seemingly made to avoid a rather crowded end-of-2025 release slate, the film’s delay means that it will no longer have to contend with other massive movie releases like Tron: Ares (9 October) and Predator: Badlands (6 November), instead being positioned in the relatively calmer May 2026 period, with the only other big-hitter that month being 20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2 (1 May 2026).

Based on the iconic fighting game franchise dating back to the 1990s, Mortal Kombat II continues the narrative of the 2021 film, helmed by returning director Simon McQuoid, with its script penned by Jeremy Slater (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire).

The film has already received an action-packed first trailer, and is set to introduce a host of new faces portraying some of the game’s most iconic characters, such as Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Kitana, bodybuilder Marytn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen (The Spy Who Never Dies) as Sindel, Damon Herriman (Justified) as Quan Chi, and Tati Gabrielle (The 100) as Jade.

Joining the new faces is a returning roster of characters, including Lewis Tan (Cobra Kai), Jessica McNamee (The Loved Ones), Tadanobu Asano (Shōgun), Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Ludi Lin (Power Rangers), Chin Han (Skyscraper), Joe Taslim (The Raid) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun) reprising their roles as Cole Young, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Jax, Liu Kang, Shand Tsung, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, respectively.

Mortal Kombat II is now set to debut in theatres on 15 May 2026.
