Matt Reeves ‘The Batman Part II’ Script Completed, Filming Starts Early 2025

Matt Reeves has officially finished the script for The Batman Part II, set to propel the saga forward after the events of the first film and HBO’s The Penguin series. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves shared insights into the future of Gotham’s Dark Knight, revealing that filming is slated to begin early 2025.

Scheduled for release in October 2026, The Batman: Part II will see Robert Pattinson returning as the titular character. Reeves will also be back in the director’s chair, continuing the narrative that captivated audiences in 2022’s The Batman. The upcoming sequel will leap forward in time beyond the first movie and The Penguin, integrating developments from the latter into the new movie’s plot.

Colin Farrell’s character, Oz Cobb, also known as The Penguin, will play a pivotal role in transitioning audiences into the sequel. “Oz does become one of the entry points into the movie,” Reeves explained, hinting at the interconnected stories of his Gotham universe. “I can’t tell you where it goes from there, except to say that we’re super excited about it.”

Reeves is exploring further television tie-ins within the The Batman universe, aiming to develop a comprehensive crime saga. “I always wanted to make sure that each of the movies that we did with Rob, that the central arc, the emotional arc of the story would be Batman and Bruce’s,” Reeves stated. “Then when I was talking to Warner Bros. about signing for TV, I said what will be exciting to me is to take characters [where] there’s not enough real estate in a movie to cover their story in full and to really dig into them. I want it to all be this sweeping Batman crime epic.”

While discussing the technical aspects of the film in a Collider interview, Reeves mentioned that he is uncertain if Greig Fraser will return as cinematographer for The Batman Part II. Despite the uncertainty, Reeves expressed his desire to continue their collaboration, praising Fraser’s significant contributions to the visual style of The Batman, “I don’t know yet. I certainly hope that the timing will work out for that, but I actually don’t know. We’re not to the place where we know that yet. I hope that’s the case because I just love working with him. I think he’s the best. Actually, he was a little bit involved in the series, too, because I said I wanted to make sure the DNA was the same as we went off and found our own visual voice.”

The Penguin series, which Reeves says unfolds over the weeks leading to the year’s end, sets the stage for The Batman Part II. The timeline suggests that the events of the sequel could take place during the winter season, following on from The Penguin.

Directed by Reeves and co-written with Mattson Tomlin, the cast for The Batman Part II also includes Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin. As fans eagerly await the next chapter in this epic crime saga, the foundations laid by Reeves promise a deep, character-driven exploration of Gotham’s most notorious figures.

The Batman Part II will open in cinemas on 2 October 2026.
