Insomniac’s ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ Game Sees Player Surge Following ‘Brand New Day’ Success

Spidey is getting a lot of extra attention lately, as Insomniac’s 2023 video game sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has received a surge of players following the massive box office success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, the three-year-old title has sold another 316,000 copies since Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit theatres on 30 July, with another 274,000 new players accessing the title via the PlayStation Plus subscription service. In total, the game generated over US$11 million across the PS5 and Steam in less than two weeks.

This increase in players no doubt stemmed from the hype surrounding the new movie, although other factors were also in play, such as timely discounts for the game on both Steam and the PlayStation store, as well as a new free update that added two new suits to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – Tom Holland’s new costume from the film and a suit inspired by Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.

Alinea Analytics also adds that the game has now sold over 18.2 million copies across the PS5 and PC, resulting in over US$1.2 billion in revenue since its launch three years ago. While not quite to its heights yet, these figures are also similar to those of the movie, which became an instant box office phenomenon and has garnered over US$1.67 billion worldwide to date.

This resurgence of players will likely continue as Insomniac gears up for its next superhero title, Marvel’s Wolverine, which is set to launch on 15 September 2026. While the upcoming title doesn’t have a companion movie releasing alongside it, the studio is celebrating its launch with the PS5 Digital Edition – Marvel’s Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition Bundle, a special PS5 console set arriving on 19 August that features a cover plate scarred with claw marks that allows users to peer into the console’s internals.
