The evil forces are growing in Lanterns, and iconic big bad Sinestro is set to join the party. As reported by Deadline, Ulrich Thomsen (Banshee, Counterpart) has been tapped to play the longtime figure in the upcoming HBO series, which is a part of the first wave of projects in the rebooted DC Universe titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters”.

The Danish actor joins previously announced leads Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) and Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Rebel Ridge), alongside cast members Kelly Macdonald (T2 Trainspotting, Brave), Garret Dillahunt (No Country for Old Men, ER), and Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever, The Night Of).

Comprising eight episodes, the live-action outing follows new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King serve as co-writers and executive producers, with fellow executive producer James Hawes directing the first two episodes.

A familiar face for comic book enthusiasts, Sinestro is a former Green Lantern turned rogue known to be “ruthless yet undeniably charming.” “Sinestro’s manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan,” continues the official description of the character.

The villain was created by John Broome and Gil Kane, first appearing in the comic book Green Lantern, Volume 2, #56 released in 1961. Mark Strong portrayed Sinestro in 2011’s ill-fated Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds, with numerous actors voicing him in various animated projects over the years.

Primarily known for his Danish productions, Thomsen broke into the international film scene with a role in the 1998’s Festen, followed by a major stint in the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough, in which he portrayed henchman Sasha Davidov.
