John Carpenter Is Returning To Halloween Franchise Via Video Games

Michael Myers is slashing his way back into the world of video games. According to IGN, two new games based on the 1978 horror classic Halloween are in the works, with Evil Dead: The Game developer Boss Team Games at the helm.

Not much else is known about either project, but one of them will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and include input from original film director John Carpenter. Reportedly, both titles are also being developed in conjunction with the producers of the franchise.

“As a huge gamer myself, I’m thrilled to help bring Michael Myers to life again in this game, and my hope is to scare you silly,” said Carpenter, who will be “intimately involved” with the development process, in a press release.

In the two new Halloween games, players can expect to “relive moments from the film and play as classic characters from one of the most iconic and important horror films of all time.” Neither project has a release date yet.

More notably, the announcement comes more than 40 years after the franchise got its first and only official video game for the Atari 2600. It’s particularly exciting for longtime fans, considering that Michael Myers has appeared in numerous titles over the years, including Fortnite and Dead by Daylight, and remains a highly-requested playable figure.

In the Atari 2600 title, there wasn’t an opportunity to play as the infamous killer. Instead, players control a babysitter, presumably franchise protagonist Laurie Strode, and try to find a safe room while being hunted by the latter. Michael Myers is also poised to return to an upcoming TV series from Miramax, which serves as a creative reboot of the original film.
