New ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Trailer Ignites Targaryen Civil War

The official trailer for Season 2 of HBO Max’s House of the Dragon has dropped, promising a season of intense warfare in the fiery landscape of Westeros. The trailer, extending over two minutes, presents new scenes that set the stage for a brutal continuation of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Scheduled to premiere on 17 June, the series is a prequel to the acclaimed Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood.

The conflict escalates following the dramatic events of Season 1, where Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar, kills Lucerys, propelling Rhaenyra onto a vengeful warpath. The latest trailer reveals both familiar and new characters, including Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen, amid dramatic dragon-filled backdrops.

The upcoming season dives deeper into the battle for the Iron Throne as King Aegon II’s usurpation of Rhaenyra’s claim ignites a war. The Blacks, led by Rhaenyra and Daemon, plan to invade King’s Landing, while the Greens, supporters of Aegon, fortify their defences. The new trailer departs from earlier promotions by focusing less on choosing sides and more on the grim reality that both factions will likely face severe losses.

True to the book, the trailer also teases a significant plot development involving Jacaerys, Rhaenyra’s son, visiting the Wall. The scene suggests pivotal alliances and strategic moves as Jacaerys is seen with Cregan Stark, hinting at crucial developments beyond Winterfell.

House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon boasts a stellar returning cast, including Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, and Rhys Ifans, complemented by newcomers like Tom Taylor and Vincent Regan. As the series unfolds, it continues to adapt Martin’s detailed history of the Targaryens, promising a season described by Martin himself as ‘powerful, emotional, and very dark’.

This release cleverly coincides with the trailer drop for The Rings of Power Season 2, highlighting the ongoing rivalry between the two fantasy giants. HBO’s strategic release aims to capture viewers’ attention amidst the competitive landscape of fantasy series. Fans can look forward to a season that not only dives deep into the lore of the Targaryens but also sets the stage for a potential continuation of the bloody saga.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is set to stream on HBO GO on 17 June.
