Gundam Targets Warhammer With ‘Gundam Assemble’ Tabletop Miniature Game

In a move to challenge tabletop gaming greats like Warhammer, Bandai Spirits has announced an upcoming Gundam-themed miniatures game Gundam Assemble, transforming the giant mech suits from the franchise into 5-centimeter miniatures.

Check out the official Gundam Assemble teaser video below, showing off iconic Mobile Suits like the RX-78-2, Wing Gundam Zero and the OZ-00MS Tallgeese:

The tabletop game will feature plastic miniatures, each requiring painting and assembly, battling it out on a hexagonal board. Unlike traditional games of the genre, it will not be army-based, instead featuring small groups of two to three characters, and use a 10-sided dice in play. Mobile suits featured in the game will also span the entire Gundam pantheon and not just specific series or timelines.

While no further gameplay details have been revealed, we know that the miniatures themselves will not come pre-assembled but on runners of around seven pieces, depending on complexity. It is also likely that the pieces will require glue to piece together as they are in static poses. Preview images on the website also tease the inclusion of more recent series in the franchise such as Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, so fans can expect to see some familiar faces. For now, here are the confirmed miniatures for Gundam Assemble:

  • RX-78-2 Gundam
  • XVX-016 Gundam Aerial
  • OZ-00MS Tallgeese
  • XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero
  • Zaku II
  • RX-0 Full Armor Unicorn Gundam
  • MSN-02 Zeong
  • Deathscythe Hell
  • EMS-10 Zudah
  • MSN-06S Sinanju
  • RB-79 Ball
  • LCAM-01XA Archangel

It remains to be seen how the Gundam franchise will transition into a physical tabletop gaming form, but its barrier to entry seems much lower than games like Warhammer, considering the adoption of a hexagonal board rather than a table-sized battlefield, meaning players won’t have to fumble around with external tools like measuring tapes to move units around. In any case, we’re sure to learn more specific details about Gundam Assemble‘s moment-to-moment gameplay as it approaches its final release.
